Focus on the Now and the New

It’s hard to appreciate what’s in front of you when you’re focused on what’s behind you. Typically we come across this when we’ve suffered some kind of loss – career, relationship, loved one, and the list goes on. I suppose that in the midst of any change, there is loss but that means there is also gain.

I’ve said it before but it’s worth reiterating – we have to mind our thoughts. If we find ourselves hyperfocused on what our lives used to look like or what we think our lives should look like, it takes us away from living the life that is happening right now. We miss out. Reminiscing is fine. Having a vision for your future is fine. Longing for either to the point of resentment of the present is not fine. I’m speaking from experience. Please hear me.

This is where surrendering and trusting in God come into play. Trusting that God has purpose for this season, and every season, in our lives positions us to embrace the unknown and prepare for the newness that lies ahead. We only hold ourselves back when we try to hold onto this version of our life that doesn’t serve us anymore. There’s a reason that chapter has ended. God is making way for something new, something better.

If, like me, you find yourself in a mental battle of accepting the past, embracing the present, and preparing for the future, it’s time to get into prayer (and therapy lol). We need to continue reminding ourselves that this kind of thinking and perspective only robs us of showing up in the beautiful life God’s blessed us with, right now. And it’s only going to get better.
