Enjoy the Ride
Success looks different for everyone – it’s so crucial that we learn & accept this fact. I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “everything has it’s season.” Better yet, let’s make it biblical a.k.a. factual – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). In short, we hit our peaks and lows in our own time, according to God’s will for us.
I’m sure we’ve all noticed that social media makes it that much more difficult to resist comparing our lives to others and falling victim to envy. Nonetheless, it’s no excuse to take our focus off of living our lives the way we should and enjoying the journey. Someone’s business taking off before yours doesn’t mean that yours won’t flourish. Someone getting married before you doesn’t mean you won’t find love.
I’ve noticed that when I find myself slipping into negative, comparative thinking, it helps to shift my focus to how I can learn from these individuals. If someone has achieved professional, spiritual or personal success that I’m working towards, then I can use them as a mentor of sorts by connecting with them (beyond stalking someone’s social media accounts).
We can also combat negative, comparative thinking by shifting our focus to our own blessings in our journey – wisdom gained along the way, adventures we’ve experienced, changes we’ve embraced and victories that lie ahead. Never lose sight of the beauty of your own journey & the timing of it all, especially not in light of God’s will for someone else.
